Biography

Michalis Karagiannis

Michalis Karagiannis was born in Piraeus in 1966. Studied at Focus School of Photography. With 30 years of experience in photojournalism, works as a freelance photographer. Founding member of Phasma News Agency, Phasma2 Photo Group and Photojournalists Union of Greece.

Work has been published in all major Greek and some international print and electronic media like The New York Times, Newsweek, 6Mois, Εconomist, Irish Times, El Mundo. Covered assignments in Gaza (Palestine), Egypt, Turkey, Kobani (Syria) and recently in Ukraine.

Since 2015 has been working with Reuters and later with Eurokinissi Agency.

Has taken part in group exhibitions at Taf Gallery (2011), Rethymno Museum of Modern Art (2012) and the Sarajevo Festival (2013) where the group project “Greece in Crisis” received the 1st prize. Recent exhibitions: “Survival Routes” (2016-2017) on refugee issue under the Hellenic Parliament Foundation in Athens and Brussels, “Gaza, the World Largest Prison” (2018) at Ioannina Culture Centre, “In Liberated Kobani-Syria” (2019) a photo story at the international Athens Photo World Festival and ¨Anthropause¨ (2020) on covid-19 at Thessaloniki Museum of Photography -MOMus. Invited and presented his work at the University of West Attica, Dept. of Photography (2022). A photo of his was comprised at the top 10 pictures of Sony World Photography Awards (2021) and in 2023 received a prize by the Foundation of North Greece Newspapers Journalists Union.
