True to its mission of showcasing contemporary photojournalism, its leading figures, and their contribution to shaping our understanding of the world and history as it unfolds, Athens Photo World has, through its exhibitions and activities, successfully brought contemporary photojournalism and photography closer to the general public.<\/p>

Since 2019, within the framework of Athens Photo World, tens of thousands of visitors have attended or experienced its photography exhibitions, talks, presentations, and digital projections held in iconic and bustling locations across the city.<\/p>

The photographers invite visitors to follow them on uneven paths through central and western Greece, across the impressive rock formations of Meteora, the mythical Dragon Lakes and Arenes, through mountain passes and gorges such as those of Aoos and Baros, the valleys of Asopos and Valia Kalda, and ultimately to reach the mountain peaks\u2014from the Pindus range to the home of the gods on Mount Olympus.<\/p>

Photographers from the Associated Press captured athletes during the last three Olympic Games \u2014London 2012, Rio de Janeiro 2016, and Tokyo 2021 (the 2020 Olympics) \u2014 in some of their most glorious moments, for themselves, their teams, their countries, and for sport itself.
Through the exhibition\u2019s 48 photographs, the spirit of the world\u2019s most important sporting event\u2014the Olympic Games\u2014was revived in the heart of the city.<\/p>

Selected work by eight (8) photojournalists<\/u><\/a><\/strong>, focusing on recent events in Greece and around the world.<\/p>

The screenings will be followed by a discussion between the audience and the photographers<\/strong>.<\/p>

This event was first presented in 2019 and 2021 with great success at four different locations across Athens: the Propylaea of the University of Athens, the Association of Greek Archaeologists, Technopolis City of Athens, and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC).<\/p>

Video<\/strong> is now a news medium that complements photographic work. Without one medium replacing or substituting the other, the experienced photographers use the moving image to contextualise with sound and commentary what their lens has captured.<\/p>

An account of the events of the Russian invasion of Mariupol<\/strong> through the eyes of an Associated Press videographer, which has already been screened at international festivals such as Sundance and won the 2024 Academy Award<\/strong> for Best Documentary Feature.<\/p>

The events will be attended by: Mstyslav Chernov<\/strong><\/a>, creator of the documentary \u201c20 days in Mariupol\u201c<\/strong>, and the Brazilian-born, Amsterdam-based World Press Photo<\/strong> curator Raphael Dias e Silva<\/strong>, who will interact with both the Athens Photo World team and the audience.<\/p>

The Athens Photo World Award<\/strong> is a significant point of interest for Greek photojournalists, as \u2013 beyond the financial support \u2013 it is another opportunity to showcase their work.
The jury<\/strong> consists each year of three members<\/strong>, different every time, who are selected by the Athens Photo World team.
The goal<\/strong> is \u2013 and so far it has been achieved \u2013 to have professionals of different photographic orientations participate in the jury, such as photojournalists alongside academics and fine-art photographers or photo editors from major news or online organizations.
This year, Athens Photo World, with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture<\/strong> and PPC<\/strong>, is organizing for the sixth year the annual Photojournalism competition<\/strong>, for professional photographers who live and work in Greece and \/ or Cyprus.
This year Athens Photo World will award a total amount of five thousand euros (5,000 euros<\/strong>) to three completed or ongoing documentary photography or photojournalism projects as follows:
First Prize<\/strong>: Three Thousand euros (3,000 euros)
Second Prize<\/strong>: One Thousand Five Hundred euros (1,500 euros)
Third Prize<\/strong>: Five Hundred euros (500 euros)
For 2024 the committee is staffed by the photographers Michalis Karagiannis<\/strong>, Pepi Loulakaki<\/strong> and Orestis Panagiotou<\/strong>.
Participation in the competition for the Athens Photo World Award is free.

The big winner, with the amount of three thousand euros (3,000\u20ac), was Petros Giannakouris<\/b> <\/a>for his work “The war in Ukraine has surpassed 1,000 days”<\/strong><\/a>. The commemorative award was presented to Giannakouris by the Ukrainian video journalist of the Associated Press, Mstyslav Chernov, while the two creators expressed the great esteem they have for each other and spoke about the friendship that connects them after many shared assignments in various parts of the world.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
